Transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity does it have clinical relevance?

چکیده

Rapid advances in neonatal care have led to a dramatic surge in survival of the veryand extremely-premature infants. This is, however ,tempered by a concomitant increase in the incidence of severe neuromorbidity in the survivors, including cognitive delay, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, blindness, mental retardation, and epilepsy. Thus, an emerging challenge in newborn care is to translate the gains in survival achieved into gains in healthy survival, without the current high frequency of neurodevelopmental impairments.

Hypothyroxinemia in extremely low birth weight infants

Hypothyroxinemia of prematurity (HOP) is a transient alteration in thyroid hormone availabilityfound in more than half of extremely low birth weight infants (ELBW) born at less than 30 weeks [1]. HOP is characterized by very low total T4 (TT4) and free T4 (FT4) levels with a normal or low thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH); TT4 and FT4 show a nadir at 7-10 days of life and they may remained low ...

Free thyroxine levels after very preterm birth and neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 7 years.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Preterm infants commonly have transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity after birth, which has been associated with deficits in general intellectual functioning, memory, attention, and academic achievement. However, research has predominantly focused on thyroxine levels in the first 2 weeks of life and outcomes are limited to the preschool period. Our objective was to ...

Frequency of Thyroid Function Disorders among a Population of Very-Low-Birth-Weight Premature Infants

Background: Thyroid function disorders, particularly congenital hypothyroidism (CHT), are important endocrine dysfunctions associated with permanent morbidities. CHT is more prevalent among preterm low-birth-weight neonates compared to term infants with normal weight. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 126 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates referred to the neonatal inten...
